What is Gibraltar...?
Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, and on a fine day North Africa itself. Gibraltar is the point where Europe is closest to its African neighbour. The territory shares a border with Spain to the north. Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a Royal Navy base.
The name of the territory is derived from the Arabic name Jabal Tariq (??? ????), meaning "mountain of Tariq", or from Gibel Tariq, meaning "rock of Tariq". It refers to the geological formation, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the Berber Umayyad general Tariq ibn-Ziyad, who led the initial incursion into Iberia in advance of the main Moorish force in 711. Earlier, it was known as Mons Calpe, one of the Pillars of Hercules. Today, Gibraltar is known colloquially as "Gib" or "the Rock". It is interesting to note today that whilst visiting Gibraltar you may see some remnants of the Moorish conquerors some thousand years ago. The Southern most mosque in Europe is also located in Gibraltar near Europa point.
The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a major issue of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations. Spain requests the return of sovereignty, ceded by Spain in perpetuity in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. The overwhelming majority of Gibraltarians however, strongly oppose this - along with any proposal of shared sovereignty.

Living in and around Gibraltar
Any candidates interested in moving to Gibraltar just off the coast of Southern Spain should enjoy the following opinion...
Life in Gib...
For any of Right Consultancy's candidates considering a move to Southern Spain or Gibraltar it will be interesting for you to note that down here you will enjoy a very relaxed pace of life with a much lower cost of living. Gibraltar enjoys a warm and sunny climate (around 330 days of sunshine a year), a diverse range of cultures (from English to Asian and of course a wealth of European workers), and possibly some of the most scenic regions in Europe. Spain is the second most mountainous region in Europe, and Andalucia enjoys many of these ranges with the Sierra Nevada's snow caps (ideal for snowboarding and Europe's Southern most ski resort) just a few hours away from Gibraltar.
Perhaps most interesting is that the spoken language in Gibraltar is English, although many Gibraltarians speak Spanish fluently as well. Living in Gibraltar you will be speaking Spanish in just a few months, and of course spending a lot of your time across the border in Andalucia and the wonderful villages surrounding Gibraltar you will be ordering drinks and Tapa's in the local tongue. Gibraltar has a fascinating History combined with a colourful mix of cultures, and is just a short walk away from Spain as you cross the border post on the other side of the military runway (which nowadays welcomes commercial flights - one of only a few in the world…!).
Gibraltar, if you like, is the gateway to the Mediterranean with the Atlantic Ocean on the one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. This makes weekends interesting as one travels down the Atlantic coast looking for ideal 'kite-surfing' spots with loads of wind and a campsite nearby. This Atlantic 'breeze' also protects Gibraltar from the extreme heat that the rest of the Costa Del Sol suffers from, making living and working here a little more pleasant. Average summer days see around 30 degrees Celsius and winter days compare at around 15-20 degrees Celsius.
With the Atlantic beaches within easy reach for weekends away, the Sierra Nevada around 3 hours down the Mediterranean coast, the historic cities of Cadiz, Jerez, Seville and Granada close by and in different directions and loads of other tastes, sights and sounds to be explored; Gibraltar is one of the most popular work places in Southern Europe. Certainly, with a cheaper cost of living, no value added tax, deductions on mortgages and such like before income tax is calculated and a gentler pace of life outside of the office - who could say no to Gibraltar.
Gibraltar offers many tax benefits, and provides a UK curriculum and exam structure. Getting back to the UK and elsewhere in Europe is also very simple with several direct flights to the UK daily from Gibraltar and with Malaga International just over an hour down the road you have access to most cosmopolitan cities in Europe and beyond.
Getting to work is generally stress free, whether you drive up from Tarifa on good and fairly un-congested roads, take a short walk across the border from Spain, or wander down from your apartment somewhere in Gibraltar (5km long by 1.6km at its widest point).
With all of this to offer you will be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable and challenging place for relocation, anywhere in Europe.
